Hurricanes and floods ravish Texas. Houses underwater. Many dead or missing.
In the early hours of August 2017, a category 3 hurricane hit the Lone Star state, flooding the streets and destroying homes. More than 100,000 residents were displaced. It was utter devastation for so many families and residents.
Many would expect to see hysteria, panic, riots. After all, Texas is one of the highest gun ownership states in America. Instead, you saw the highways lined up with trucks hauling boats to come rescue families, coming as far away as the south of Florida. There were blood drives. Food drives. Clothes drives. In my community alone, we sent well over 5000 personal hygiene kits of shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, toilet paper, diapers and so much more.
You saw strangers becoming family and family getting stronger. You saw communities rebuild and love all around. No hurricane could destroy what we all hold in our hearts. Love. Kindness. Compassion. Human Strength. Many lost their clothes and children lost their toys. Some lost very personal artifacts of sacred memories and a house of beauty. What we lost in the material world, we gained in our hearts. The strength of humankind. No one can take away the beauty that lay within, our god given gift of kindness and love.
We love to love and love to help. This is human kindness. It is all around. Just look around.
